Ghosts aren’t afraid of duvets… but I am!!

A researcher in the UK has discovered that the average duvet won’t protect its owner from paranormal experiences:

Probably because a ghost has never tried putting a duvet into a duvet cover. Do that a couple of times, and duvet fear will be instilled forever!!

Washing the duvet cover and then sticking the duvet back inside is one of my least favourite things to do. Last time I did it, I was sweating by the time I finally got that sucker in. I’m not kidding. It was the most action I’ve had in bed since we adopted our Catahoula Jackson and he decided that the best place to sleep is in between hubby and me. We let him get away with it because he’s so cute and soft and snuggleable. Unfortunately, he also snores. And likes to flip around in the middle of the night, which means most mornings I wake up to a dog butt in my face. I’m sure it breaks about 73 “good housekeeping” rules to let a dog sleep on the bed — but I’m a bit of a rebel when it comes to rules :-)

But I digress — I thought I’d document my last putting-the-duvet-into-the-duvet-cover process because… well, I’m not really sure why. I guess I just want to share the misery ;-)  So, here we go — the mattress is flipped, the sheets are on, and it’s time to face the enemy

Yes, it’s the Duvet from Hell. My mission — to get the Duvet from Hell into the Duvet Cover from Hell…

duvet 4 cover

Some people actually iron their duvet cover every week. Insanity!! That’s double-torment!! I never iron mine. But because I was documenting my duvet grief, I decided to iron mine for this one occasion. I hate ironing. The first iron hubby and I bought was to attach strips of melamine along the edges of melamine shelving. Did you know that you can iron a duvet cover right on the bed?? :-)

duvet 5 ironed

So now the duvet cover is ironed and spread inside-out on the bed. I read somewhere that this is the best way to get a duvet into a duvet cover. I’m not so sure I agree. I mean, really, is there ANY good way to get a duvet into a duvet over?? But anyway… next, the duvet gets spread out on top of the inside-out duvet cover…

duvet 6 duvet

And now the fun begins… flipping the duvet cover back outside-in with the duvet shoved inside…

duvet 7 midway

What a mess!! But finally, the duvet is all the way inside the cover:

duvet 8 almost

And how do you get all the duvet corners into the duvet cover corners?? You crawl inside, of course!!

duvet 9 inside

So this is what it feels like to be a duvet…

duvet 10 inside

I’m sure there are other ways to do it, but this way works for me :-) And voila, duvet is now inside duvet cover…

duvet 11 finished

And it’s time for TMDC (Too Many Damn Cushions)…

If you have a better way to get a duvet inside a duvet cover, please let me know!!

Kelly,

These things will change your life. I cannot imagine having a duvet without them.

They take the horror out of putting a duvet cover on and you will never have to crawl inside your duvet again.

Do you go in with your cell phone just in case you can't find your way out?

Kelly, this is hysterical. I am always griping about this job, it is right up there with a root canal in terms of fun. I keep threatening to blow off the whole duvet thing and just get a washable bedspread lol. See, we have a cat. A beautiful, sweet, adorable cat who we love very much. Who loves to sleep on the bed with us (and without us) and who IS A GIANT HAIRBALL ON LEGS! I'm going to check out bed bath and beyond to see what gadget Paul recommended. Great post! Kathy

Good post so true! This is my line for dealing with the with the duvet issue ... Honey can you do something for me? I also can't stand stuffing the pillows.

Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog because now I've found yours. All the best, Susan

So funny! I can imagine all the effort. I bought a duvet, used it once and never used it again for the same reason...Christine

Kelly I can just picture you wrestling with it. Tooooo funny! Thanks for my laugh of the day.

As a hobby-sewer I have made a few 'covers' and for the reason you described, designed them using two zippers....top and side. If the seam edges are finished and pressed properly, the spacing between them are not visible and the section can be folded right back. (Velcro wud work too.) No crawling inside it, risking never to be seen again nor flapping of body-parts resembling a Canada Goose on take-off. :)

The doodads that Paul suggests will hold the duvet in place. (I've also used curtain disc- weights attached to the each corner of the duvet.)

Oh forgot to add, your bed looks marvelous by the way. Well worth the effort!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is hilarious! I admire your perseverance..., I gave up a long time ago. No duvet cover..., just a throw over the duvet. That probably too goes against good housekeeping rules. But since the duvet is on top of the sheets I figure a hot tumble is just fine for a wash (or rather dust mite extinction).

Oh I TOTALLY hear you. I have ribbon ties on the interior of the duvet and each corner of the comforter. I tie them together, stand up on my bed and just shake the heck out of it. :)

Kelly an off topic question. Would you have been walking Squirt and Jackson around 2:00 pm this afternoon? Saw a women with two dogs that resembled them (didn't check for a blue or red collar) but thought, mmmmmmm "I wonder if that is Kelly? It sure looks like her dogs".

Ha Ha, Kelly.
My duvet and I fight every week, and every week it wins!
It's nice to know that I'm not the only one.

And how come nobody else has come up with the idea of a two-zipper duvet cover?? That would make life SO MUCH easier!! You should patent that design -- you could make millions!!

I'm happy to see I'm not alone in my duvet hell :-) Really, whoever invented the duvet cover must be the same person who invented pantyhose. They both take forever to get on, and they never stay where you want them to!!

Paul, I've tried those clips in the past, but they didn't work out as well as I'd hoped.

Thanks for all your comments -- good to hear it gave you my duvet hell gave you some laughs. At least my pain wasn't all in vain ;-)

I clicked on this posting after searching for info about Smoochy Poochy dog collars... but thought I'd add my two cents. I start with the comforter right side out, and pinch the two bottom corners (corners opposite the opening) and while keeping ahold of them, work them through the duvet cover and to the opening (so the duvet cover bunches up around your arms), grab two corners of the duvet (so you now have those two corners of the duvet fitting nicely in the respective corners of the duvet cover), and pull the corners (of the duvet cover & duvet) back out together - as you pull back, the duvet cover will slip over the duvet, and you will need to give it a few good, hard shakes to have the duvet fill into the duvet cover. Then I go to the other end, make sure the corners of the duvet are in the corners of the cover, close up the cover and give it a couple more shakes from that end. I kind of think of it as being similar to putting on a long sock that's been bunched down to the toes first (little more effort up front, but easier and better fit overall) versus pulling it straight on. Hope this is helpful!

I'm going to try this technique next time -- thanks!!

Very funny but duvet covers do not have to be so complicated to put on, at least when it is done correctly. Check out the awesome video on this lens and you will see what I mean! You will have to scroll down the page to find it. The picture of the video isn't so great but it has helped me ALOT! Good luck! Great Stuff On Duvet Covers
