I’ll be doing this again Very Soon!

Brian and I have bathrooms on the brain… we’re getting ready to break ground in our basement so that we can rough-in and then build a brand new bathroom AND once that’s done, we’ll gut and renovate our hideous main-floor bathroom. I can’t wait!!

I LOVE bathroom renovations!

Let me share with you the remodel of the family bathroom in our previous home.

First… the BEFORE and DURING photos:

BR PreDemo 1 BR PreDemo 2

I hated this bathroom with it’s almond everything, 80s gold tile and brass fixtures. Yuck!! We also found that it just didn’t meet the needs of our 3 teenagers. They need space for all of their hair and hygiene products!! By the way – 2 of our kids are boys and they seem to have as much bathroom paraphernalia as a girl! We also recognized that the bathtub was never used. So… a room with more storage and no tub (we had a great tub in our master bathroom)… that’s what we realized we needed.

So the tear-out began! It was a messy process, but it was a lot of fun!

BR Demo 1 BR Demo 2

The plan: we’d install a tall linen tower and a tiled shower in place of the tub. Here are more in-progress pics… but first, I love this photo of my brother, Brad, patching a whole in the ceiling (we moved a light from this position to the shower area).

BR Reno 03

We positioned the linen tower (espresso brown maple) on the left, then Brian built a wall next to it. Next, it was my job to waterproof the shower stall… I used a Schluter-KERDI Shower Kit (you can see the shower pan leaning against the wall – and the orange stuff on the wall is the waterproof membrane). This product is FAB and relatively easy for the DIYer!!

BR Reno 01 BR Reno 04

I think I’ve mentioned before… I’m the tile setter in our remodelling team and I love the task! :-) I used a porcelain tile that looked like stone on the floor (I used the same tile in our kitchen – a consistent look throughout the condo was important to me), with a smaller version of the same tile on the shower floor paired with a slate tile for accent.

BR Reno 05BR Reno 09

For the walls I used a white subway tile with chocolate brown glass tiles framed by white listello trim tiles. I carried the tiles all around the bathroom like wainscoting. It looked great! (if you look closely at the second photo you can see the slate tile I set in the threshold between the bathroom and the hallway – it was a beautiful detail and a great way to transition the two spaces!).

BR Reno 07BR Reno 08

Next comes the vanity (also in expresso brown to coordinate with the linen tower)…

BR Reno 10 BR Reno 11

I loved this vanity with it’s trough-style sink and it’s base that looked like a piece of furniture. Perfect!

Next came the install of the toilet and plumbing fixtures, chocolate brown paint on the walls & ceiling and glass doors for the shower… in other words…

Here are the AFTER pics!!!

So that’s it!

I so enjoyed the process of planning, tearing out and rebuilding this bathroom and I can’t wait to do it two more times in our current little bungalow!!

I hope YOU enjoyed the process, too… at least in photos!

I’m sharing this post with the readers of Between Naps on the Porch. Susan from BNotP is the gracious host of Metamorphosis Mondays, and my bathroom transformation should be a perfect addition to the party! Be sure to head back over to BNotP and see what other great projects are being shared!

Note: With the exception of electrical and the installation of the glass shower doors, all work in this space was performed by Brian, Brad (wall repair) and myself. All photos taken by me, too.

Absolutely gorgeous. I love the subway tile and the niche for the shelves. Isn't redoing a bathroom so satisfying? We re-did our guest bath last year and I just loved it, and love the result!

Bravo!

I love to see room transformations; I don't have the vision to see the possibilities myself, and am always so impressed when people think of great ways to solve design challenges!

Great, rich color in the bathroom. I also love - LOVE! - the storage you came up with to the side of the shower.

I must say, though, I feel for your one girl, having to share a bathroom with her teenaged brothers! Fortunately, you redesign will make this task much easier.

Beautiful transformation! I love the black and white. What could be classier.

Lovely bathroom transformation! And it's so impressive that you and the family did so much work on your own. I tiled a bathroom in our last house... all I can say is, "Oy."

But at least my husband watched the babies while I did it--that's how long ago it was!

You must miss this lovely bathroom. And eventually you'll get that second one in this home, and be able to renovate your one-and-only. (And at least it isn't some crazy funky color or covered in wild patterned tile. Look on the bright side!)

Hi Victoria -- I'm back to say I am also looking at the bright side of a bathroom we "inherited" with this house -- in fact this afternoon I am going to go and prime a big fugly oak vanity, before painting it off-black. Gotta make that lemonade, you know, 'cause this bathroom is sure a lemon!

And lucky you-- to have a hubby who can do things like window trim. Mine is very good at opening wine bottles, arguing with the utility company on the phone, and making restaurant reservations. Hey, could be worse I guess!

Have a great day and thanks for checking in ... Cass

You have encouraged me to begin our bathroom makeovers...we have 3 in this house that need to be done. You really made it look....well, not too hard. Hmmm, hope they turn out as good as yours looks. Thanks for stopping by to see my aluminum collection.

I am a first time visitor to your site, and a new blogger. Your remodel appears seamless, well done! I thought you made excellent use of your space by tucking the tall storage unit next to the shower.

I love the new look and color. I especially like the mirror extending out from the wall. Any regrets yet with a smaller vanity?

This transformation is so yummy I could eat it. Victoria, it's totally official, you have the BEST before and afters! I love the chocolate browns, and I adore the tiles that you chose. I wish you could come over here and help me with my bathroom, it is so ugly :( We've done a couple of things in there but there is still 1980's cupboards staring at me every time I go in there. Well, a future project right?? Great job!

Um, yea, bookmarked. This is exactly what needs to happen to bath tubs everywhere. You're the second person I've heard recommend that brand of shower stall - noted! Thanks Victoria
