Pattern passion: Oversized Houndstooth

PK at Room Remix is having a Pattern Inspiration Party — and it just so happens that there’s a particular pattern passion that I have at the moment :-)

This is the room that got me started on my current pattern obsession…

I love everything about this living room. The colours, the lucite coffee tables, the fireplace mantel and screen… all gorgeous!! But what I love the absolute most are the chairs — the combination of solid and patterned fabric is fantabulous, and the oversized houndstooth is super-fantabulous!! I can’t tell you exactly why I love it, but I do!! I love it A  LOT. It’s big, it’s bold, it’s graphic — a great modern take on a classic pattern.

Houndstooth checks originated in the Scottish Lowlands. Traditionally, houndstooth was black and white.

Not only has houndstooth broken out from the traditional black and white, it also comes in a variety of materials.

And finally, a lovely brown & white houndstooth rug used in two completely different spaces. First with lots of other pattern…

I just came across this beautiful living room designed by April Hamilton that I HAVE to add. Love the houndstooth AND the armillary sphere :-)

Hi Kelly! Thanks so much for linking up. I was hoping I wouldn't have to party by myself. :-) Quite honestly houndstooth was a pattern that never even entered my mind so I'm so excited that you chose it, especially because the inspiration photos you chose are so good! I started to pick a favorite, but I can't. I've seen that Tobi Fairley room so many times too and never really paid attention to the fact that those pillows were houndstooth. Isn't that funny?

I love it Kelly.
I remember once buying fabric from a shop that sells men's suits fabrics and making cushions out of it. Of course it was not nice and oversized like these. Great post.

I love that look! I would tend to go more for the muted tones - like the green, pink or brown - over the stark black and white pattern.

Wow didn't realize how much houndstooth was around! I really want a black and white houndstooth winter coat - love that look!

I love that pattern too! I love the soft muted gray with the pinky girly room.

p.s. I'm glad I could inspire you to dig out your old spoon racks - you'll have to let me know what you come up with!

Oh houndstooth, it gets me every time! I don't think I'll ever tire of it.
My favorite photo is that pink room. It's so unexpected and perfect!

I love the graphic quality of houndstooth! The bigger the better!! The color ranges are great as well! My favorite is when this traditional masculine fabric is done in feminine tones.

Fun collection of photos! Funny how changing the scale and color of houndstooth can create different design moods...

(btw - love your Mark Twain quote!)

Wow, I have never seen so many awesome uses of houndstooth, this is such a great round up! And now you've got me wondering what patterns I am smitten with!?! I think I have a few favs right now, even though people may think I'm behind I am still lusting over Imperial Trellis. So pretty!

Houndstooth is such a classic print, it totally deserves its return to the spotlight with these large scale modern versions! I'm especially loving the yellow armchair.

I love me some houndstooth! I love it in all colors and scale. Even my husband recognizes a good houndstooth now.

Houndstooth always reminds me of "women of a certain age" wearing too-big, boxy skirt suits. Really like it in lighter colours, as you've shown here - lime greens & pinks especially! Converted.

(And thanks for your vote Kelly!)
