Sunburst mirror makeover

meta monday starmirror furniture seenThanks to Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for hosting the weekly Met Monday blog party :-) It’s a great opportunity for everyone to share and be inspired by makeover projects, big and small :-) This week, I have a mirror makeover to show you.

I really like sunburst mirrors. A couple of months ago, I picked one up at HomeSense for $50. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but I figured I could jazz it up a bit and hopefully make it look more like one of these mirrors…

This is the mirror I started out with. A bit plain, but a good starting point…

before 1

suppliesmirrorsThe supplies I used are:

  • Spray primer
  • Spray paint
  • Painters tape
  • Exacto knife
  • Little mirrors (three sizes)
  • Hot glue gun

I wasn’t crazy about the brassy finish, so I spray painted the mirror silver. I started with taping off all the mirrors with painters tape. Not a bad project to do outdoors on the deck in the sunshine :-) I rubbed the tape on really well to make sure there were no air bubbles for the paint to sneak under.

before 2

Then I sprayed both sides with a couple of coats of primer…

before 3

Followed by a couple of coats of silver paint…

before 4

And then hubby and I glued on the little mirrors. I set them out randomly on each spike, and hubby followed behind with the hot glue gun.

And this is how it turned out — hanging on the bedroom wall…

…and hanging outside on the patio. This will likely be its home for the summer.

And a close-up…

Not quite as elegant as my inspiration mirrors, but not too bad :-) And the whole project, including the original mirror, cost less than $100 — that’s REALLY not bad!!

Blog_Award_thumb And on a totally unrelated topic… thank you, Gayle at Planet M Files for giving us the One Lovely Blog Award :-) It’s the second time we’ve received this award, so I guess we must be doing something right!! :-)

Don’t forget to head back to Between Naps on the Porch and check out more Met Monday transformations…

This must be one of your spray-painting projects you mentioned - what a great job you did! And placing it on the patio is a great idea - give the outdoor some indoor style!

Thanks for the comment on our big day. You should try one of the courses, if only to make some great new contacts. Who knows, we may end up at the same one!!!

Have a great week!

It looks so completely different! I love the idea of the mirror effect. Especially outdoors. You did a remarkable job with this. And you should be proud to tell everyone who visits that it is a custom job you did yourself!

Kelly,
All right! Now were talking genine restyled interior pieces. Next incarnation you could turn it into a wall clock. (On the center mirror, cut out a small hole for motor. Add clock hands with motor, numbers by gluing them on, rehang)
Like magic restyle!

Great post on variety of sunburst mirrors.

what a very well done DIY on your sunburst mirror. I love the final result.

I also love the sample image you showed (by Home Glamor) with a different sunburst mirror on that dark foyer wall -- oooh, like that.

I don't do nearly as many DIYs as I used to -- but I know how good it feels to complete a project.

It's great to take something that's just so-so, and turn it into something totally unique and beautiful. Nicely done!

hi again kelly...lol thank you so much for such kind words for my daughter, its an exciting time and i will so miss her in september, but i know i have to let her go, we are so proud of her. Im not sure if the true color of her dress showed up on the monitor, but it is purple. The funny thing is when she picked this dress, i thought of you, and it may not show in the pictures well but her boyfriends shirt is the identical shade of purple as her dress and his tye was purple and silver, they looked fantastic together. Tomorrow night is the grad ceremoni, I likely wont sleep a wink tonight, i have major butterflies as im so excited but yet so nervous for her. Yes, the park bench photo was taken by our second daughter, is another one of my favorites that she has taken, love the simple serene look. Thanks once again kelly for your sweet words that i actually find very comforting too.
hugs
