From 1939 Sad to 2009 FAB ~ My Kitchen!

Phew! I’ve just spent the weekend re-painting our kitchen – it went from a pale sickly yellow to a warm yellow called Powell Bluff (Benjamin Moore)… and I think it looks fantastic! A great big thank you to Maria Killam from Colour Me Happy for her help in choosing this lovely colour!Butterfly

In the great big scheme of things though, changing the wall colour of our kitchen is small potatoes compared to it’s original transformation a little over a year ago! And since this is Monday – the very day that Susan from Between Naps on the Porch hosts her fun and popular weekly blog party Metamorphosis Mondays – I thought I’d share the complete and dramatic before and after of our kitchen!

In the beginning (2008) there was a little bungalow built in 1939 with an original and pretty damned ugly kitchen!

Here’s the evidence… photo taken on move-in day:

I’m CRAZY about my farm sink!!!!!!!

How about this…

HaHa! Move-in day again. And my old pup, Simon… he likes to hang his head in my photos!! :-)

Again… same view…

Hey… I’m not done sharing yet! Here’s another angle of the room, transformed!

If you’ve read my “Project Overload? Never!” post you’ll know that we’ll be installing a window in that far wall sometime this summer and I’m so looking forward to being able to look out to the backyard while sitting at the little bistro table! Once the window is installed we’ll complete the paneled wainscoting on that wall (if you look closely you can see that there’s nothing there except the originally sickly yellow wall paint).

So… Do you like what you’re seeing so far?

How about some pics of mayhem??!! LOL!

And some photos of us putting it back together…

This is a fantastic photo of my brother Brad and his partner Shelley… the were so unbelievably helpful during the drywall phase of our remodel, sanding until they were almost unrecognizable! Ha! Love you guys!!

Below… photos of me happily tiling and my handsome Brian installing the stair railing.

Enough of that boring tear-out and rebuild stuff… you’ve come to see and read about a metamorphosis!

See… there’s my Simon, hanging his head again! HaHaHa!!

While I’ve got you looking down… like my tiling handiwork?

And this is the view of the kitchen from the dining room…

I’m a little sad… the transformer in one of our beautiful stained glass pendant lights has been damaged and has to be replaced. Until that’s done, only one of the lights works… so I can’t show you how pretty they are when they’re all lit up. :-( Well… I can show you the one light!

I love our back door and I’m soooo looking forward to the day when it accesses a fan-tabulous back deck! I still have to paint the exterior side, but I haven’t decided on a colour yet! Maybe a dark red like the front door??

My granite – Crema San Marco. Love the colour and veining!

My backsplash is a combination of taupe subways and glass listellos (not loving my backsplash) :-(

And a last look at the breakfast area…

So.. now you’ve seen one of the largest transformations in our little house to date. The space was so much fun to design and remodel… and equally fun to share with you! It’s time for you to head back to Between Naps on the Porch so you can visit the other metamorphoses found in this week’s blog party… that is, after you’ve said “hello” to me in a comment of course!

Thanks for dropping by!!

  3. I'm so excited to finally see this kitchen! We've seen "glimpses" in other pictures that hinted at how gorgeous it is. This does not disappoint! Just a beautiful transformation. I know how much work went into this, but the payoff is so worth it. I love those pendant lights. You're not happy with the backsplash? I think it's beautiful. And I love the new color. Great post Victoria. Kathy

  5. Hi Victoria,
first of all my apologies - the last time I commented I did not realize that it was not Kelly I was commeting to.
Your kitchen transformation is adorable. Oh my, this was a whole lot of work but the result is a little miracle. Looks very very cosy and warm. I love that little breakfast corner that looks a bit like a French Café.
Greetings to Kelly too, Petra from Munich

  6. WOW!!! What a beautiful makeover! You must be thrilled and must never want to leave that room. I did a complete kitchen makeover a few years ago and was so happy when it was completed. The mess and trying to live through it all was very stressful.

  7. Wow Victoria, thanks for the tour. Your kitchen is beautiful --you guys did a fantastic job. That you did it yourselves must make is doubly satisfying. Bravo!

  8. Victoria - it's stunning! You should totally submit it to a magazine. And I love how your dog shows up in a couple of the photos - too cute! It makes me wonder - do you have to keep a ladder handy to reach the top cabinets? And that sink - swoon. Lovely!

  12. What amazes me is that you took all these 'before' photos BEFORE you started blogging! I have been so bad at taking before pictures (not these days though now that I have a place to post them).

Your kitchen really is a beautiful transformation! And great colour too :)

  25. This transformation leaves me speechless, really. Loooove the farm sink too..., and the open shelving..., and everything, including the eat in nook with the bistro table (yes, I love bistro tables too -they remind me of bistro gardens in Europe). I will have my brand new kitchen soon (I hope).

  26. What a beautiful before and after Victoria. And to have done the work yourself...the best!! It's even more rewarding that way. Looks like the lighting would make it very inviting in the evening as well.

Thanks for your nice comments on Ivan's blog...so sweet of you both !! :)

  30. You've made some really nice choices -- I particularly like the roman shade, floor tile, farmhouse sink and back splash. As my grandmother used to say, "Use it in good health!"

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh gosh I don't know where to begin commenting! I love the cupboard doors, the pendant lights -- very unique, and the vastly improved overall look. If you ever saw the before/after photos of my kitchen you'd see a big difference what colour can make. When we moved it EVERYTHING was start white, not cream, not off-white but stark white (walls, ceiling, cupboards, and an off-white floor! Talk about white overload. I hated it even though I happen to like white.

Sheesh, how did I get onto my kitchen? Love seeing your before and afters!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh oh, just me again :) I also love those bistro chairs, that back door!! wahoo, and the roman blinds. Sorry, told you I didn't know where to begin (or end apparently).

  33. Wow, wow, wow! What a transformation. I love your kitchen redo. And I really love your farm sink. I want one!!!! Can't believe it's the same kitchen. Pat yourselves on the back, you've done good.

  34. Wow! This is amazing. I think transformation may be an understatement, this looks like it's in a different house(and much larger!). I have to admit, I did like the original tiles in the backsplash. Hopefully you were able to save them and give them a new life somewhere else.

The more I see those farm sinks, the more I want one, they are gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  35. No way! My jaw dropped when I saw the "after" photos. This is an amazing makeover. And I really like the idea of adding the window that you mentioned. Beautiful! I'd like to feature it on my blog if that's okay. I'd show a few of your photos and then send them over here to see the rest. Thanks! -J

  36. OK, this kitchen is AMAZING. AMAZING. My favorite parts are:

    - Tile -- it looks really great with those different sized shapes.
    - The open shelving on the cupboards on the sides of the sink. Terrific.
    - The opened-up stairwell going downstairs

But my most favorite thing is...
    - The bench at the little bistro table! WONDERFUL!

And now I'm asking myself, Why haven't I thought of that before, DUH!
