Hooked on wood decks

BHG 7 Better Homes and Gardens contacted us a little while ago to let us know that they have a lot of resources on their web site for building decks. They asked us if we would be interested in sharing these resources with our blog buddies. Seeing as my deck has been a work in progress for about 5 years (I’m sure it’ll have a railing eventually…), and Victoria and her hubby are planning to add a deck to their home soon, we decided that we would most definitely be happy to not only share BHG’s info about backyard decks, but put some of their info to use ourselves!!

So that’s why this for this week’s Hooked on Fridays—hosted by the summery Julia at Hooked on Houses—I’m hooked on wood decks :-)

First off, here are some helpful links on the BHG web site:

These are just some of the beautiful decks at BHG…

And now let’s take a look at some beach decks, contemporary decks, and traditional decks.

I don’t know about you, but my deck has to have at least a couple of Adirondack chairs. OK, these ones aren’t actually ON a deck, but they set the mood for summertime lounging, don’t you think?? :-)

And how about an Adirondack chair on a deck by the beach (pics from Completely Coastal)

Artist Daniel Pollera creates amazingly realistic coastal paintings. Wouldn’t you love to be sitting on one of his decks right now…

This deck is practically in the water!!

An apartment might have a little balcony deck…

…and some houses have lots of decks, like this house in Chile called Metamorfosis 1. It’s a renovation of an existing wooden house by architects José Ulloa Davet & Delphine Ding. Can you imagine having to stain all that wood?! (pics from affluence.org and archdaily.com)

And not to be outdone, here’s an intriguing Japanese house with an equally intriguing deck. It’s the Shell House designed by Kotaro Ide of ARTechnic Architects. That’s one cool deck!!

Some big traditional houses with big wraparound decks (well, OK, porches)…

One more contemporary deck. I like the combination of wood & stone & water

As cool and sexy as the contemporary decks are, there’s something so appealing about more traditional, weathered grey decks with colourful flowers

And we can’t forget Susan’s deck! Those of you who are regular readers of Susan’s blog Between Naps on the Porch have likely read about the building of her wonderful deck & porch… and if you haven’t, be sure to make your way over there for all the before and after photos! Here’s a peek at the end result… love it!

And finally, a couple of pretty front porches… love the painted ceilings :-)

I hope these pictures and the BHG links have inspired you to build or renovate your own deck. Don’t let the fact that it’s almost September stop you — start planning now so you’ll have a great backyard (or front yard) deck to enjoy all summer long next year :-)

Now go see who’s hanging out on Julia’s deck back at Hooked on Houses

OMG, some of these decks are pure heaven. What a great post. So funny too, because today I had a client wanting help with her choice of deck colours from Trek Decks. I chose pewter for her pale gray house.

Great job, tons of inspiration.

Great looking decks! I like the decks with multi-levels, especially when they are big {I think it helps break up all the straight lines}.

They all look so new. They don't stay that way long without hard work. "Celtic Anamcara" is most like ours: siver-y, roughed-up, rustic after 20 years in the weather.

I don't even know where to begin! I love them all! The eplans house with the giant wrap-around porch is something I've had in my files to build one day ... and all the decks on the ocean ... well, you know I'm gonna love that! Plus, that really weird looking one in Chile is crazy cool. Thanks so much for sharing! :)

Nice blog on decking. Also, I might add that decks should be designed for outdoor living! Make the most of yours by first making a plan that is large enough to accomodate the desired activity on the deck. Next, consider the materials that will be appropriate for your deck. There are many choices beside the traditional treated lumber or redwood decking. There are composite materials that need relatively no maintenance as well as woods such as Brazilian ipe that are very long lasting and are relatively maintenance free. Nice post!

Kelly, marvellous images! You must have invested quite some time in this compilation of images, one more beautiful than the other. I could not even say which one were my favourite.
Very inspirational!!
And of course - I love the paintings...

Great pictures! We could really use a deck. Our breakfast room has sliding doors that should walk out to a deck, but instead there is just wood slats blocking it. The people before us never built a deck in the 11 years they lived here. LOL! So now we have a nice 2 story drop off to nothing. Some day, I'd love to have a sun room.

Those pics are truly fab. I dream of living in one of those modern all-wood houses. Someday...

They are all so cool! You ladies find the most amazing pictures. They are wonderful for daydreaming!

Those are quite an accumulation of amazing decks! Carpenter Robert will hopefully be finished with mine soon. I'll end up with about 1000 square feet of deck. Almost another house. I am going crazy decorating it!

We have a deck behind our home that I have been working on since we bought the house 3 years ago. I'm going to use that one image of the tree coming through the deck as inspiration for what to do next. I think it's just what my deck needs.
Love Susan's (from Between Naps on the Porch) deck. She did a fantastic job!
Thank you for sharing.
