Today is Earth Day, and in honour of eco-friendly living, here are some amazing pieces made by talented artisans who are doing their part to save our planet by reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Peter Wehrspann is the founder and chief designer of Holtzundmetal in Toronto. Check out these awesome chairs. Can you guess what fabric he used??
It’s old Canada Post mailbags!! If mailbags aren’t your thing, Peter will create custom-made chairs with sentimental and previously owned fabrics or with reclaimed wood that he attaches to steel chair frames.
The Ideal Source Lounger is perfect for the dock, the garden, the patio, or even the living room. It’s made from reclaimed lumber sourced from the Greater Toronto Area.
You’ll find a whole lot of old traffic signs in Boris Bally’s Providence, Rhode Island studio:
What does he do with them?? The question is, what does he NOT do with them!! He combines the traffic signs with other materials like recycled aluminium, champagne corks, and steel hardware to create pieces like the BroadWay Armchair:
Small Square Transit Tables:
And Transit Chairs:How about some cool house numbers??
Boris’s pieces would work best in a home with a more industrial or modern design. But he also makes accessories that could add a funky touch to any home.
aSIGNed Clipboards:
The reVIEW mirror with recycled bottlecaps for the studs… I see a Molson Canadian cap there :-)
The Pentatray:
Re-claim frames:
And even key fobs!
Fire & Light in California creates hand-poured glass tableware form recycled glass. The company was formed in 1995 as a partnership between the Arcata Community Recycling Center in Humboldt County and a group of local investors who wanted to develop an innovative plan for using crushed recycled glass. The result — beautiful, colourful, and unique glass dinnerware and giftware.
Have you come across an artisan that creates beautiful items for the home from recycled materials?? Leave a comment and let us know about him or her :-)

Hmmmm Kelly - I could get crazy about that recycled glass - I absolutely love it.
And while you are all celebrating Earth Day - here is a great video from Greenpeace that says it all:

If the link is too long - it should be on the Greenpeace site. It is really worth while to see!
Great post - btw!
Greetings, Petra

wow, I love that they have used such unique items and created beauty from them. Love it!
Love, love, love the recycled glass, all the colors.....pretty.
Recycled glass that looks really pretty .... Good post !
What a great post! Recycling is definitely good, I can't believe when I go to flee markets and second hand stores, all the great things people discard. Good thing we can re-buy them though =D
The best thing about reusing materials like this is the insane creativity. It takes a lot to make one thing into something completely different. Kudos to these designers! And to you for writing about it =D
These are so funky! I love the chairs though I can't see snuggling down to a movie in them.
LOVE LOVE LOVE those recycled glass pieces!
