The anti-me room

I was looking through my inspiration folder this morning and came across this picture:

3261630791_422a3e68bb_o

I have no idea where it’s from or what I was thinking about when I saved it. It’s totally opposite from the kind of decor I like. There isn’t even a single touch of purple in it!!

But then I took a closer look, and realized that even though the overall look of the room is too busy and neutral and kinda frou-frou for me, there are lots of individual elements in the room that really appeal to me… the tufted sofa, the wood floor, the twisted twig base of the coffee table, the birch logs in the fireplace, the mirrored wall above the fireplace… and check out the blue butterflies scattered across the mirror. I love how they add a touch of colour and whimsy to the room :-)

Even though this living room has quite a formal look to it, it also somehow manages to look relaxed and welcoming to me.

What do you think??

Have you seen a picture of a room that’s totally anti-you, yet there’s just something about it that appeals to you?? If you have, tell us about it :-)

And on a completely different note… a special thank you for all the wonderfully supportive comments on my back to school post :-) I’m always amazed by how supportive bloggers are of each other :-)

Blasphemy - no purple! : ) I have pictures like that too and usually it's because of one little thing {that I probably should circle or mark somehow} that I really liked.

I like the butterflies above the mantel (they're almost purple they're so blue!) and the chandelier...other than that, it's way too formal for my taste!

What an elegant space! I spotted those sapphire blue butterflies first, before noticing anything else. What can I say? I'm hopelessly drawn to color! :)

I think sometimes we all like rooms that totally "anti-us" if not for the style for the overall balance, beauty and perfection. It has nothing to do with a person's style it is just appreciating good work

This really is a beautiful room. I'm like you, it's completely opposite of most of the rooms I'm drawn to, but there is such a nice mixture of elements that I really like it. We are redoing Cait's room, and I find that I'm leaning toward a style that is completely different from what I usually choose, all thanks to a painting that was given to me and a quilt I found at a "junque" sale. We'll see how it turns out if I EVER get it done lol. Kathy

I love the title of this post! Yes, that's happened to me, too, where I'm draw to something that is so not my style.

Absolutely! I've seen room that are totally not my style but used a couple elements or smart ideas that I could use too. This photo is a great example of that. It's not my taste but the tiled mirror wall with the butterflies on it seems like a good idea in a kid's room, the large painting/photo looks great and the standing logs in the fireplace is a good idea as well.

Knowing I wud never tire of it, I love it! Though basically neutrals are used I feel what makes this space pop is the use of relfective/glass/gloss elements. (Hope that makes sense.) ie: The mirror, glass coffee- table top, sheen of the fabric etc. -Brenda-
