Decorating with orange

Kelly @ JAX Decor & Design

Maria at Colour Me Happy posted this article about orange. Which got me to thinking about decorating our loft...

This is the sectional in our loft – the Charles by Silva (ignore the dining room chairs and table leaf propped up against the wall!!)

We weren’t looking for an orange sectional, but Charles was just too good a deal to pass up. Plus he’s SO comfy, and handsome too :-) So now that we’ve got him, we need to decorate the loft around his big orange self.

The floor is heritage grade walnut with a natural finish (lots of colour & grain variation). The walls and ceiling are currently Benjamin Moore Stone House -- it was painted before Charles came to live with us. I'm not sure if we should keep Stone House, or go with another colour.

I’m planning to go in a sort of modern rustic direction in the loft, with a touch of Craftsman. These are some of the accessories I'm going to use:

I really like this ceiling fan (we need good airflow up there):

We’re planning to install a fireplace with a faux stone wall like this:

Close up of the stone...

Just want to add a few more pics... these are two cushions I picked up at HomeSense today. You can also get a closer look at the sectional fabric....

I'd love to hear your thoughts on what we have planned for the loft, and how you would decorate with orange :-)

I like Charles and your floor is stunning.
A photograph never delivers the colours appropriately (have you ever seen an image of a painting in a book and the same in a Museum? The pinks of Gauguin are almost impossible to reproduce and that is also why good Art Books are sooo expensive)anyway from your picture it is hard to judge the real colour of Charles but I believe Stone House is not the right match (I can see pink on it) and I would go with a colour more on the cool side. White will be stunning with your floor and being a loft...

Oh my God I love that sofa! It's fabulous. It's a great orange! Stonehouse is definitely too pink for that sofa, I would actually try a sample of the HC-28 Shelbourne Buff I mentioned yesterday. That colour is in the stone so it would relate well to that. It's a nice rich goldy beige. Paint a sample (on a piece of poster board) and then prop it up on the sofa (with some white poster board behind it) so you are not visually comparing it to the colour underneath. Then take the same painted sample and hold it up beside your fireplace stone and you'll see how the colour relates to that as well. Then all you need is some cushions and artwork with the same colours combined to pull it all together (that of course you know)! There's blue in the stone as well so you go that route but it's definitely cooler. If you wanted it more contemporary and less warm and fuzzy you could paint the walls CC-490 Smoky Taupe, that would also look fabulous with the black accents. If you've never used that colour before and you think it looks too gray then go to the cold grays in the BM deck and you'll see how beigy/taupe that colour really is (you can't see colour properly unless you are comparing it to another one). The stone you've picked is a huge factor because of all the colours in it so I would make sure the colour you end up with relates to it. You want the end result to look like you've planned it that way, not like you are ignoring the fireplace. Let me know how it's going, and thanks for the mention!

well im sorry but i have no advice to offer, because you know me, i would totally blow it..lol However, i must say i love that sofa, both color and style....certainly could throw all my cream accents on it. j/k our neighbour has stonehouse in every room of her new build and i have never seen a pink undertone, do you suppose it is just your photo?

I would have absolutely no idea how I would decorate with orange that is why I am going to follow this transformation with great interest. Those walnut floors are stunning, actually, I dont think I have seen floors using Walnut here in Melbourne, could be because its an expensive wood?

Thanks for all the feedback :-) I'm hoping to get this project going soon. I just love being in the loft and sitting on Charles -- but I need something to look at besides blank Stone House walls while I'm sitting on him!! ;-)

I just thought I'd comment again on the colour. Stonehouse would only look pink when compared to a yellow or orange like we are doing here. On it's own it doesn't read that pink really, I have specified it in entire homes in West Vancouver when people are just looking for something warm and neutral for the walls. Shaker Beige is a nice one as well, I specified that in the spec house on 'best way to sell your house in 2009' post that I did.

Hi! Great blog - I just stumbled upon it today! Love the sectional! I'd throw in some smokey blue too cool that bad boy off.

Found your blog today through my favorite blog- Colour Me Happy. I have a sofa in this color also. I tried pairing with purple- too much. I agree with Sarah, a great deep or smokey blue. My walls I painted Smoky Taupe like Maria stated. Great blog you have!
